Middle Tennessee Mensa

Welcome!

You've found the website of Middle Tennessee Mensa, the Mensa chapter for Metro Nashville and surrounding counties. (Officially, we're Local Group #370, in Region 5 of American Mensa, Ltd.) These pages contain useful information for current and prospective members, as well as those who are simply curious about our organization. We hope you will find our website interesting and informative, and we welcome your comments and suggestions.

About Mensa

What is Mensa?  It's an international "high-IQ" society with over 100,000 members.  There is only one qualification for membership in Mensa: a score in the top two percent of the general population on a supervised standardized intelligence test.  Mensans range in age from pre-schooler to centenarian, and roughly half are Baby Boomers.  We're a non-profit organization, and all our officers are volunteers.

Mensa's constitution says the group's purposes are to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity; to encourage research in the nature, characteristics, and uses of intelligence; and to provide a stimulating intellectual and social environment for its members.

In addition to their local Mensa group activities, members are encouraged to attend Regional Gatherings (RGs) and Annual Gatherings (AGs), and to participate in Special Interest Groups (SIGs), which are informal groups of Mensans with common interests.

Mensa does not have an "official opinion" on any political, religious, philosophical or social issue. Opinions expressed on this (or any other) Mensa website are those of individual members, none of whom speak for the group.

Becoming a Member

See "How to Join American Mensa" at the American Mensa website (www.us.mensa.org) for a printable application form and list of acceptable test scores, as well as information about taking Mensa's own admission test. (American Mensa does not accept unsupervised testing as proof of eligibility, specifically unsupervised testing administered electronically or via Internet-based tests.)

We give the Mensa Admission Test in the Nashville area several times per year. The testing fee is $30, and a reservation is required. To find out more, e-mail our Local Secretary.

If you meet the standards for admission, you'll receive an offer of membership. Shortly after you accept the offer and pay your first year's dues, an officer of the local group will contact you with details about Mensa activities in your area.

Annual dues for American Mensa membership are currently $49. Life, multi-year and family membership plans are also available.

Calendar

Instead of stuffy meetings with formal agendas, we prefer casual come-as-you-are and buy-your-own-dinner events. Known as Friday Gatherings, these twice-monthly gab fests are a great way to unwind after work with good food and stimulating ideas. (It's been said that at a table of twelve Mensans, you'll typically hear thirteen conversations....)

Here are upcoming local and regional Mensa functions (official and otherwise), as listed in our monthly newsletter.
